Über mich

  • As the Federal Capital Territory Authority strives to
lighten up Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja, investigations carried out by
LEADERSHIP revealed that Prostitutes, street urchins and vandals are working round the clock to ensure ‘operation light up’ Abuja project ends in futility.

    forbes.comLEADERSHIP gathered that
the prostitutes are a versed to street lights because,
their patrons, who are men of means are weary of been seen when coming
to pick up their clients. The investigation also revealed that, to avoid bad market, prostitutes are said
to be enlisting the services of competent
electricians to tamper with street lights by removing the transformer
fuse, once it is time for their trade.

Sources at electrical department of FCDA who pleaded anonymity, gave
account to LEADERSHIP, of how he uncovered the nefarious activities of women of night
    trade.

"There was a time power failure on Augustus Aikhomu Street became alarming. I decided to pay a surprise visit to the transformer controlling the street. To my amazement, I discovered the phase controlling the street light was switched-off. I switched it on and drove off. Some meters away, a young girl selling oranges flagged me down and informed me that, they will come to off it again."

That is the fate we have been suffering. We are doing everything to
ensure that night life is made more pleasurable for residence of the territory, but the
activities of this group have remained a daunting challenge, the sources
    said.

A further probe also revealed that, Abuja street urchins, whose dubious trade, prospers under the cover
darkness, are at dagger drawn with the attempt by the city authority to lighten up Abuja.
It further revealed that, if you are driving along airport road, around the
national stadium, to the left, the transformer, meant to power the street light in the area was vandalized and emptied, thereby making the area flash point, under the fall of darkness.

Mrs Abimbola Akin Omoluabi, who also narrated to LEADERSHIP, her ordeal in the
hands urchin locking around the national stadium said, "On that faithful day, on my way from Lube, i was driving alone and it was already getting dark. Immediately my car jerked like three times and stopped. Three young men emerged from a nearby bush with too many questions at once; I knew I was in for trouble. They offered to help me, but little did I know my handbag and phone on the dash board has been whisked away. By the time a good Samaritan stopped to help me, I have lost valuable to these dubious guys, who immediately retreated the moment a Sienna car stopped to help."

It was also discovered that, if you are coming from the airport around the same stadium, but this time to the right, the transformer,
meant to power the street light in that area has also been feasted
upon by the urchins, whose earnest desire is to ensure that, the area remained
in darkness to enhance their nefarious activities.

The third category of groups oppose to lighten up Abuja are the vandals, whose
preoccupation, unlike the Prostitutes and Urchins, is outright theft electrical
infrastructures for recycling or use. Account of the city
authority sources indicate that, my arrest and prosecution have been affected but the vandalism still
continues. The sources urged Nigerians to be vigilant in the defense of public facilities.
