snatched both gold medals in the men's and women's marathon Sunday in the U.S.
city of Houston, a repetition of what they did last year and in previous years.

Bazu Worku defended his Houston title Sunday in the men's race with a clock
time of two hours seven minutes and 32 seconds, the third-fastest time in the
Chevron Houston Marathon race history.

His fellow countryman Getachew Terfa crossed the line 22 seconds later at
2:07:54, and Jose Antonio Uribe from Mexico shattered his personal best with a
2:08:54 to place third.

Worku, 23 and Terfa, 30 battled stride for stride for most of the back half
of the race before the younger man began to pull away in the final half-mile.

Worku told the media through an interpreter that he intended to return to
Houston and break the course record of 2:06.51, set by Tariku Jufar in 2012. He
didn't make it because "toward the end there was some wind noticeably affecting"
him.

"The course is very good," Worku said. "I'm really happy to win this time.
Last year it was very difficult because of the wind and the rain."

Fellow Ethiopian Abebech Bekele won the women's race in 2:25.52. Her
countrywomen Meskerem Assefa and Gelete Burka took the silver and the bronze in
2:25:59 and 2:26:03 respectively. Bekele's result was the eighth-fastest
performance in race history.

The win was the eighth consecutive in Houston for Ethiopian women. The

Ethiopian men have won the last six Houston races. ' In the U.S. half marathon,
Meb Keflezighi and Serena Burla, both American, were winners of the men's and

second time with a time of 1:01:23. Burla, a cancer survivor whose story
inspired many Americans, took the first in 1:10:48.

About 25,000 runners participated in the races at this year's marathon and
half marathon, organizers said.

The races brought an estimated 250,000 people to the Houston area this year
between participants, spectators and volunteers, which makes the weekend race
the largest single-day sporting event in Houston.

Australia , Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- The European Parliament and
theEuropean Council on Thursday reached a provisional agreement onaccounting of
emissions from land use, land use change and forestry(LULUCF).

According to an official news release, this would help implementthe European
Union's (EU) 2030 climate objectives which form partof the EU's policy to drive
Europe's transition to a modern andclean economy.

The regulation on land use, land use change and forestry willincorporate
greenhouse gas emissions and removals related toagricultural land and forestry
into the EU's climate framework from2021, said the release.

This provisional agreement must be formally approved by theParliament and
Council of Ministers. Following the approval, itwill be published in the EU's
Official Journal and enters intoeffect 20 days later, according to the release.
